Little Athletics is about Family, Fun and Fitness – and making new friends along the way.

Little Athletics in Queensland

Balmoral Little Athletics is one of the 105 centres across our state who are members of Little Athletics Queensland (LAQ). In Queensland little athletics is divided into 11 regions. Balmoral is part of the South East Region together with nine other centres.

Each Little Athletics season, which runs from Aug/Sept to March, the centres in our region come together to compete at various regional carnivals, with all the regions coming together for the statewide carnivals (winter, spring and summer) and championships (state relay, combined event and state championships). For more information, please visit Little Athletics Queensland website.

At Balmoral, we have approximately 250+ new and returning children register each season to enjoy the fun and benefits of little athletics.

We welcome children of all skill and ability levels, aged from 5 to 17 years. We offer plenty of encouragement and a safe environment to help them achieve their personal best! Our emphasis is on fun, fitness and friendships – and a ‘have a go’ attitude. We encourage children to discover new skills and learn to be their best while making friends and having fun.

Our Annual Season

Our season runs for 20 weeks, starting in August/September and ending in March with breaks during the school holidays. Our season comprises:

  • Weekly free coaching by qualified coaches on Tuesdays from 6.00pm to 7.00pm
  • Weekly club competition on Wednesdays from 5.30pm
  • Option to compete at local and regional events during the season, culminating with the Queensland Little Athletics States Championships in March
  • End-of-Season Club Celebration & Presentation to recognise and acknowledge the efforts of all our athletes during the season. This is usually held in April after the State Championships.

One of the benefits of little athletics at Balmoral is we run our program in the evenings to avoid the heat of our summer days and during the week which leaves weekends free for families.

As our emphasis is on family fun, during the year we also celebrate certain events, such as Easter, Halloween, Christmas, or host a crazy socks or hats night, inviting everyone to dress up for the event. The evening may also include special prizes, fun events for the whole family, or maybe a special event just for mums, dads and carers to show their athletic prowess.

Little Athletics is a team sport

The success of little athletics and the reason the kids have so much fun each week is underpinned by the support and involvement of families each week.

As our club is run by parent volunteers. We rely on parents getting involved and supporting our weekly competitions run smoothly and successfully. This involves helping with field equipment set up and pack up, being an age marshal, measuring, recording and helping with the BBQ. Don’t worry if you’re new to athletics, here is plenty of support.

Our club is managed by a Centre Committee who are parents of athletes that volunteer their enthusiasm and time for a season or two to ensure our Club remains a success and provides a warm, welcoming and fun environment for all our families and athletes.

To support the efforts and commitment of our committee, we in turn, ask for your support and involvement to ensure continued success and fun for everyone.

For more information about how little athletics works please check out our FAQs. If you any other questions please email our Centre Manager. You’re also welcome to visit our club where a Committee Member can show you first hand.
